We originally evolved a 'fight or flight' mechanism designed to keep us safe from danger, however we now experience such a busy pace of life, our body and mind are in a permanent state of stress. Our skin is part of our nervous system and continuously communicates with the brain in response to stress factors and it will, when required produce cortisol, one of the stress hormones. When produced in high levels, cortisol can induce redness and flushing and this low level inflammation can over time lead to premature ageing of the skin and it damages the skin barrier layer. In fact many common skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and rosacea can be triggered and accentuated by stress. Stress is not the only contributing factor to cortisol dysfunction, lack of sleep also plays a part and can induce skin stress and premature ageing. It has been found that our relationship with electronic devices is causing sleep disruption and the light emitted (blue light) has been linked with an increase in stress levels.
